Stephen Kates has been named president of the American Orthopaedic Association for the next year during the organizationโ€™s annual leadership meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Kates currently serves as interim dean of the VCU School of Medicine and executive vice president of medical affairs for VCU Health. He previously served as president-elect of the 139-year-old organization.

โ€œIt is an honor and a privilege to serve the AOA in a leadership capacity at this important time in medicine and healthcare,โ€ said Kates. โ€œIโ€™m optimistic that we will rise to meet the challenges ahead and create opportunities to deliver the quality orthopaedic care that is essential to thriving and healthy communities.โ€

As president, Kates will lead AOA initiatives focused on leadership development and challenges facing the orthopaedic specialty, including workforce shortages and the increasing demand for musculoskeletal care.

Kates is internationally recognized for co-developing the Geriatric Fracture Center model of care, now adopted by hospitals across the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
