The long-anticipated King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Medical City in Bahrain is one step closer to completion following a key signing ceremony held in Manama on May 10, 2025. Spearheaded by the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), the project is being backed with SAR1 billion in funding from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, underlining the nation’s continued commitment to strengthening regional healthcare infrastructure.
SFD CEO Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad represented Saudi Arabia at the event, joining high-level dignitaries including Chairman of Bahrain’s Supreme Council of Health, Lt. General Dr. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, and Saudi Minister of Education Yousef Al-Benyan.
The project involves finalizing and equipping a university-affiliated hospital within the medical city, which will house 276 beds and span 70,000 square meters. Once operational, the state-of-the-art facility will feature a range of specialized departments covering internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and surgery, all outfitted with advanced medical technology in line with international standards.
In addition to expanding access to high-quality care, the medical city is set to play a vital role in building regional healthcare capacity. It will offer training opportunities for medical students and professionals, helping to foster clinical excellence and support Bahrain’s broader goal of delivering an integrated and resilient healthcare system.
The ceremony also saw participation from several Bahraini officials, including Minister of Education Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Public Works Eng. Ibrahim Al-Hawaj, Minister of Health Dr. Jalila bint Al-Sayed, and Arabian Gulf University President Dr. Saad Al-Fuhaid.
