Dubai, UAE โ American Hospital Dubai has successfully performed Dubai’s first robotic mitral valve repair, marking a major milestone in minimally invasive heart valve surgery. The hospital is currently the only healthcare facility in the UAE offering robotic cardiac surgery.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Mohi Mitiek, Head of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, together with the hospital’s multidisciplinary heart team. It was carried out on a 60-year-old patient with severe degenerative mitral valve disease after medical therapy failed to prevent the condition from progressing.

Robotic mitral valve repair offers a less invasive alternative to conventional open-heart surgery, providing benefits such as less pain, reduced blood loss, fewer transfusions, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays.
Using the da Vinci robotic surgical platform, the surgical team successfully reconstructed the patient’s mitral valve. A post-operative echocardiogram confirmed complete elimination of mitral regurgitation, with the patient walking independently the day after surgery and discharged on the third day without complications.
“Robotic mitral valve repair represents the pinnacle of modern reconstructive valve surgery,” said Dr Mitiek. “The robotic platform provides exceptional visualisation and precision, enabling us to perform complex valve reconstruction while minimising trauma to the patient. This landmark surgery reflects American Hospital Dubai’s commitment to delivering the highest-quality care through advanced technologies, ensuring the fastest, safest recovery possible for our patients.”
American Hospital Dubai was the first in the region to introduce the fourth-generation da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. Its Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (COERS) is also the region’s first private healthcare facility accredited by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) for robotic surgery.
