President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has given his approval for the appointment of Chief Executive Officers for various agencies under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, has been appointed as the Director-General/CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority(NHIA), marking a significant development in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, officially made this announcement, heralding a new era of leadership in the healthcare sector.
In his new role, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri brings a wealth of experience, previously serving as the Managing Partner at Flint Atlantic Capital Partners. His diverse background encompasses advisory positions with the Nigerian Ministries of Health and Finance, as well as a career as a primary care physician.
Dr. Ohiri’s academic qualifications include a medical degree from the University of Lagos and a Master’s degree in Public Health and Health Policy and Management from the prestigious Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. During his time at Harvard, he distinguished himself as a Healthcare Management Fellow.
His career journey has spanned clinical medicine, consultancy, and advisory roles in both the public and private sectors. Notably, he has served as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey and Company, where he focused on assisting healthcare clients across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, specializing in areas such as private equity, strategy, and organization design.

He has played crucial roles on expert advisory panels for renowned international organizations, including the Institute of Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization. His appointment will bring invaluable expertise and innovation to the National Health Insurance Authority, focusing on reinforcing healthcare accessibility and quality across Nigeria.
