The question of whether cancer is contagious remains a common concern. Awareness about the illness is essential for prevention and maintaining good health. Meanwhile, it is equally important to dispel myths about existing diseases and help patients lead quality lives. On this world Cancer Day, let us shed light on Cancer as a disease and burst out myths surrounding across it.
Why do people still believe cancer is contagious
Lack of awareness, widespread misconceptions, and misinformation along with confusion about the links between certain viruses, genetic inheritance, have led many to wrongly believe that cancer is contagious.
In reality, cancer develops due to genetic mutations caused by abnormal cell growth within a personโs body. It does not spread through touch, intimacy, sharing meals, or breathing the same air as someone living with cancer.
Are there any rare situations where cancer can be passed between people
Although cancer is not contagious, there have been a few extremely rare incidents in which cancer has been reported to spread. In such cases, organ or tissue transplantation has resulted in the transmission of cancer from a donor who had undetected cancer. This occurs because transplant recipients are given immunosuppressive drugs to prevent their bodies from rejecting the new organ, which weakens their natural defence system.
Under normal circumstances, a healthy personโs immune system is designed to recognize and destroy foreign cells that enter the body. In the same way, if cancer cells were to enter a healthy body, the immune system would typically identify and eliminate them before they can cause harm.
Why talking openly about cancer is still difficult
The emotional weight of the disease, long-standing stigma, misinformation, and lack of accurate knowledge have created a society where conversations about cancer are often met with fear and discomfort. As a result, patients may feel silenced or isolated. It is essential for families and friends to create a supportive environment that offers both physical and emotional care reducing isolation, encouraging open dialogue, and boosting the patientโs self-confidence and sense of dignity.
Cancer is not a flu and so it will not spread. Let us be informed and spread awareness so that a healthy environment is created for the patients.
