Bayer and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have entered a five-year strategic partnership to accelerate drug discovery and development, initially focusing on cardiovascular and kidney diseases using data-driven research and translational expertise.

Bayer and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) have announced a strategic five-year collaboration aimed at advancing the development of innovative therapies, spanning early target identification through to Investigational New Drug (IND) application.

The agreement covers all disease areas currently under investigation at Bayer, with an initial focus on cardiovascular and kidney diseases, both of which represent areas of substantial unmet medical need. Through the partnership, the two organizations aim to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into potential new treatments.

The collaboration will draw on VUMCโ€™s extensive research infrastructure, including its BioVU biobank, which houses large-scale DNA and plasma datasets. These resources will support data-driven insights to speed up the discovery and development process. Bayerโ€™s capabilities in drug discovery and translational science will be combined with VUMCโ€™s strong preclinical and clinical expertise to advance promising therapeutic candidates.

โ€œThis collaboration exemplifies our shared vision to harness cutting-edge science and real-world data to bring innovative treatments to patients faster,โ€ said Juergen Eckhardt, M.D., Head of Business Development and Licensing at Bayer Pharmaceuticals. โ€œCollaborating with VUMC underscores our commitment to advancing precision medicine and fostering partnerships that integrate world-class research capabilities with industry-leading development expertise.โ€

โ€œVUMC has many internationally recognized research faculty along with deep and unique data resources that enable pharmaceutical discovery and development,โ€ said Ken Holroyd, M.D., holder of the Brock Family Directorship for Applied Innovation and Vice President for Tech Transfer at VUMC. โ€˜โ€˜We are delighted to enter this new and important collaboration with Bayer. We will complement Bayerโ€™s expertise to fulfill our mission to convert research into impactful new treatments for patients.โ€
