The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the Regional Research Agenda on Health, Migration and Displacement for the Western Pacific Region, with a focus on the growing health impacts of climate change.

Developed with input from 108 experts and stakeholders across the Pacific and Asia subregions, the five-year roadmap aims to strengthen evidence-based policymaking, build regional research capacity, and promote collaboration to support more inclusive, resilient, and climate-responsive health systems.

“Climate change, migration, displacement and health can no longer be considered separate issues. Across the Western Pacific Region, their impacts are increasingly visible in communities and health systems. This agenda provides an important foundation for generating the evidence needed to inform equitable and effective responses,” said Dr Sandro Demaio, Director and Head of Office of the WHO Asia-Pacific Centre for Environment and Health.

The agenda identifies key research priorities, including universal health coverage, primary healthcare, health emergency preparedness, migration-sensitive health systems, and the social, economic, environmental, and structural determinants of health. It also emphasizes improving data systems, sustainable financing, research governance, and stronger engagement of migrants, displaced populations, and young people.

To support implementation, the roadmap includes dedicated action plans for the Pacific and Asia subregions, helping countries translate research into policy and strengthen equitable healthcare systems.
