World Health Organization (WHO) has issued its first comprehensive clinical management guidelines for filovirus diseases, including all forms of Ebola and Marburg virus infections. The guidance comes as the Democratic Republic of the Congo responds to an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

The new guidelines provide 16 evidence-based recommendations aimed at improving patient survival through early supportive care, rapid diagnosis, dehydration management, shock treatment, laboratory monitoring, and structured follow-up for survivors.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says, โ€œThese new guidelines are a perfect example of how WHO leverages science to better protect and care for people during outbreaks and health emergencies, The current Bundibugyo virus outbreak is a stark reminder of the need for diligent, holistic and person-focused medical care, to save lives and preserve human dignity. We encourage governments and authorities to integrate these new recommendations into preparedness and outbreak response, to ensure high-quality care for everyone.โ€

Developed through global expert consultations, the recommendations are designed to help healthcare workers, health facilities, and policymakers strengthen preparedness and response efforts during filovirus disease outbreaks, particularly in regions with limited treatment options.
