Kenya is expanding efforts to improve maternal and newborn health as part of its broader push towards Universal Health Coverage. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale recently held discussions with development partners on strengthening support for the Government’s Every Woman, Every Newborn, Everywhere (EWENE) agenda.

The collaboration will focus on reducing maternal haemorrhage, improving healthcare-worker skills and increasing access to appropriate medical technologies. Initial interventions will target 18 priority counties identified by the Government, while newborn care support is planned for five counties.

Healthcare workers will receive mentorship, virtual learning and targeted capacity-building to strengthen the quality of maternal and newborn services. The initiatives will also connect maternal health programmes with HIV and family-planning services to improve continuity of care.

Digital health will be another key area, with Kenya developing a health-sector command centre dashboard to monitor critical indicators, identify service gaps and support faster decision-making across priority health programmes.

The partnership aims to strengthen national healthcare systems, improve implementation capacity and address persistent gaps in maternal and newborn care, supporting better health outcomes for women and babies across Kenya.
