Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) is advancing innovative treatment approaches for hyperhidrosis through its use of single-port robotic thoracic sympathectomy, offering patients a highly precise and minimally invasive solution for excessive sweating.
Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating beyond the bodyโs normal temperature regulation needs. The condition can significantly affect quality of life, leading to functional difficulties such as problems with writing or gripping objects, as well as emotional and social challenges including embarrassment, anxiety, and reduced confidence.
SSMC recently highlighted the case of Meera, an 18-year-old patient who had struggled with severe axillary, palmar, and plantar hyperhidrosis since childhood. The condition caused persistent social challenges and bullying that affected her daily life and confidence.

Prior treatments, including creams, medications, and Botox injections, failed to provide lasting relief and were often painful.
Under the care of Dr. Puja G. Khaitan, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at SSMC, alongside Dr. Mostafa Eldewer, Cardiothoracic Specialist, and Dr. Omar Al Afeefi, General Surgery Specialist, Meera underwent a single-port robotic thoracic sympathectomy procedure.
The surgery utilized two robotic arms inserted through a single one-inch incision on each side to remove a segment of the sympathetic nerve responsible for excessive sweating. The 45-minute operation was performed using staged single-lung ventilation and resulted in immediate symptom relief.

Meera was discharged on the same day and later described the outcome on Instagram, stating: โThis was the best decision I ever made. You saved my life!โ

Following the procedure, her axillary and plantar hyperhidrosis were also resolved, significantly improving her quality of life and self-confidence.
Dr. Puja Khaitan commented: โThis procedure represents a significant advancement at SSMC in treating focal hyperhidrosis, particularly affecting the palms and axillae, caused by overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. While initial treatments like topical antiperspirants, oral medications, or botulinum toxin injections are often tried, they may fail to provide lasting relief. For severe cases, thoracic sympathectomy offers success rates exceeding 90% for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis.โ
Dr. Abdulqader Almessabi, Chief Medical Officer of SSMC, added: โMeeraโs story is a testament to our mission of delivering world-class healthcare that empowers patients to live with confidence.โ
The case reflects SSMCโs broader commitment to delivering advanced, patient-centred surgical solutions and expanding access to innovative treatment options for complex medical conditions across the UAE.
