Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, has achieved a major milestone in auditory healthcare by successfully performing Qatar’s first implantation of the Osia® OSI300 hearing device. The breakthrough procedure marks a new era in hearing rehabilitation for patients with conductive hearing loss and single-sided deafness.
The Osia® OSI300 is a next-generation osseo-integrated hearing implant that addresses the limitations of traditional bone conduction systems. The device combines surgical precision, minimal invasiveness, and advanced sound transmission for enhanced clarity and speech comprehension.
“Performing Qatar’s first Osia® implant marks a significant breakthrough in auditory rehabilitation,” said Dr. Faisal Abdulkader, Division Chief of Otolaryngology and Audiology at Sidra Medicine. “This technology offers hope to patients who previously had very limited treatment options. It reflects our commitment to innovation, patient-centered care, and world-class expertise in the region.”
The implant is placed using a minimally invasive, flapless technique and includes a small titanium fixture integrated into the bone, along with an external sound processor. This system transmits sound as vibratory signals directly to the inner ear, significantly improving sound localization and speech understanding in noisy environments.
The first three implant recipients were children with distinct clinical conditions:
- A boy with hearing loss due to blast trauma in one ear
- A girl with congenital inner ear malformation who had never received prior audiological care
- A boy with single-sided deafness from an inner ear anomaly
Dr. Malek Abu Safieh, Clinical Director of Audiology at Sidra Medicine, commented:
“This technology has been life-changing—restoring hearing, boosting confidence, and enabling clearer communication in both academic and social settings. It also supports faster recovery and has excellent cosmetic outcomes, making it ideal for pediatric patients.”
The success of this program underscores Sidra Medicine’s position as a regional leader in advanced and personalized auditory care. With more patients scheduled to receive the implant, including those with complex congenital and anatomical challenges, the hospital is set to expand access to this transformative intervention.
One of the parents, whose son Mohammed was among the first to receive the implant, shared:
“Our son was born at Sidra Medicine. Learning that he lacked a hearing nerve in one ear was heartbreaking, but the ENT team gave us hope. Thanks to the Osia implant and their expert care, he now enjoys his favorite cartoons and music again. We’re forever grateful.”
