Maie St. John, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S., professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA, has been named the Andelot Professor and Director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, effective Oct. 1. She will succeed David Eisele, M.D., who has led the department with distinction.

Established in 1914, the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery has built a global reputation for excellence in patient care, research and innovation. For more than a century, the department has been at the forefront of advancing clinical practice and scientific discovery in otolaryngology and head and neck cancer.

St. John is an internationally renowned surgeon, scientist and educator, whose research has focused on the mechanisms of tumor progression and metastasis in head and neck cancers and works to translate findings into new therapy approaches. Her funded research portfolio includes multiple NIH grants that bridge basic science with clinical research and service. Her innovations have contributed significantly to improvements in both oncologic outcomes and patient quality of life.

“Dr. St. John is a dynamic and innovative surgeon-scientist whose visionary approach to head and neck surgery, translational research and education has advanced the field on a national scale,” says Theodore L. DeWeese, M.D., dean of the medical faculty and chief executive officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “Her appointment marks the next chapter in our mission to deliver world-class patient care, drive discovery, and train the next generation of leaders in medicine.”

St. John currently serves as professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA, where she also holds the Thomas C. Calcaterra, M.D., Chair in Head and Neck Surgery. In addition to her surgical leadership, she is a professor of bioengineering and co-director of the UCLA Health Head and Neck Cancer Program. Under her leadership, the department has undergone clinical and academic expansion and is now recognized among the top programs in the nation.

As executive director of cancer research and education at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, St. John has also played a key role in the training and mentorship of future physician-scientists. She has been recognized with numerous awards for teaching, research and leadership in the field.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. St. John to Johns Hopkins,” says Kevin Sowers, M.S.N., R.N., F.A.A.N., president of Johns Hopkins Health System and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “She brings a unique blend of surgical precision, scientific rigor and compassionate leadership that will build upon the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery’s storied legacy and drive it into a bold new future.”
