Japan has contributed US$10.5 million to the UN to strengthen humanitarian response, recovery, and sustainable development efforts in Ethiopia, with a focus on climate resilience and vulnerable communities.

The United Nations has welcomed a contribution of US$10.5 million, equivalent to approximately ETB 1.62 billion, from the Government of Japan to support humanitarian response, recovery, and sustainable development initiatives across Ethiopia.

The funding will be primarily channelled through United Nations agencies to address urgent needs stemming from climate-related shocks and population displacement, while also reinforcing resilience, livelihoods, and the delivery of essential services for vulnerable communities. The contribution underscores Japanโ€™s ongoing commitment to peace, human security, and sustainable development in Ethiopia.

Through this support, the UN will help advance Ethiopiaโ€™s national development priorities, promoting inclusive and people-centred growth in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and the countryโ€™s Ten-Year Development Plan.

โ€œI thank the Government and people of Japan for their unwavering generosity and steadfast commitment to Ethiopia. Their support is crucial in addressing urgent humanitarian needs and helping communities build resilience in the face of persistent challenges,โ€ said, Dr. Aboubacar Kampo, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator a.i. in Ethiopia.

โ€œJapanโ€™s enduring commitment underscores the power of collaboration, demonstrating that innovative, people-centered solutions can create lasting change and advance Ethiopiaโ€™s path toward recovery, stability, and inclusive development,โ€ said Dr. Kampo.
