London, UK: A new clinical trial across England will examine whether simple blood tests can help general practitioners (GPs) identify multiple types of cancer earlier, potentially improving diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

The tests, developed by the University of Birmingham and its partners, are designed to detect signals linked to different cancers through a single blood sample and indicate where they may originate in the body. The trial will involve at least 200 NHS GP practices and more than 20,000 patients.

People aged 45 and above who visit their GP with abdominal symptoms, such as persistent bloating or discomfort, may be eligible to participate. The research will cover 14 types of cancer, including prostate, ovarian, bowel, pancreatic, stomach and liver cancers, which are often diagnosed at later stages.

The testing approach will incorporate technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and blood protein analysis. Researchers will assess how effectively these tests can support GPs in identifying patients who may require further investigation and urgent treatment. The findings will help determine whether the approach could be introduced more widely across the NHS.
