Saudi Arabia is continuing to support digital transformation in the healthcare sector, keeping pace with Vision 2030. Among its significant achievements are digital hospitals. The most prominent of these is the virtual hospital โ€œSehaโ€, which was officially opened on February 28, 2022, by the Ministry of Health In partnership with the Digital Government Authority. It has become the largest virtual hospital in the world of its kind, comprising 170 hospitals within the Kingdom, and it has a capacity of more than 480,000 patients annually, based on the official report of the Saudi Ministry of Health. Therefore, Seha is not just domestic; it also represents an international model that demonstrates the capability to achieve global excellence through digital innovation in enhancing access to healthcare and delivering better outcomes.

A transformative era of care

The digital transformation with new opportunities for innovation is not limited to the virtual โ€Sehaโ€ hospital only, but also encompasses a noticeable expansion in telemedicine services across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, especially since the Coronavirus pandemic. Digital health platforms such as โ€œSehhatyโ€ and โ€œMawidโ€ have allowed patients to consult doctors, make appointments, and view medical records while at home, making access to health care at an unprecedented speed.

Following the Coronavirus pandemic, the โ€œSehhatyโ€ app evolved to include the Health Digital Twin feature, a virtual file representing an individualโ€™s health status, predicting current or potential future healthcare challenges, and suggesting lifestyle improvements. This analytical tool represents a new paradigm by enabling individuals to proactively track their health and reduce reliance on emergency visits or delayed health screenings.

Artificial Intelligence powering a new era of health transformation

AI plays a pivotal role in removing barriers that have been hindering the rapid availability of medical services. In fields such as radiology and pathology, smart algorithms help doctors make faster and more accurate decisions by efficiently analyzing medical images or disease samples, enabling the timely detection of diseases, often before symptoms appear.

AI has also become important in supporting remote diagnosis, minimizing medical errors, and allowing doctors to focus on complicated cases rather than everyday tasks. The result is a better quality of life for patients and increased efficiency of the health system as a whole.

Integrated digital health services

Digital transformation in Saudi Arabia did not stop at โ€œSehaโ€ Hospital or digital Health apps, but rather now features a comprehensive system of services, such as:

  • Virtual specialties: Patients have the option to consult doctors in over 30 medical specialties remotely, which include cardiology, oncology, and neurology.
  • Remote health monitoring: Using Internet of Things (IoT) devices to measure vital indicators such as blood sugar and blood pressure, and send them directly to doctors.
  • Augmented reality-enabled surgeries: With the help of augmented reality and high-resolution visual communication technologies, specialists can supervise surgeries in remote areas.
  • Multidisciplinary virtual panels: These allow doctors from different hospitals to discuss complex cases together via digital sessions.

Ways to overcome challenges

Despite these remarkable strides, the Kingdom faced several challenges in building an integrated digital health system, such as:

  • Training medical personnel to use digital tools and leverage AI in diagnosis.
  • Protect health data by implementing strong cybersecurity and adhering to international standards.
  • Systems integration between the virtual hospital โ€œSeha โ€ and various applications such as โ€œSehhatyโ€ and digital medical record files (EHRs).

The Kingdom has succeeded in confronting these challenges through partnership strategies between the public and private sectors, and making major investments in the digital foundations, earning it international recognition as a leader in this field.

Driving economic and social change

The impact of digital hospitals is not limited to improving health alone but extends to broad economic and social benefits:

  • Reducing pressure on conventional hospitals through virtual consultations.
  • Reducing the costs of transportation and unnecessary medical procedures.
  • Enhancing efficiency by using AI in scheduling appointments and managing resources.
  • Providing care to remote groups from urban centers contributes to health equity.

Aligned with vision 2030

This transformation is completely in line with the Health Sector Transformation Program, one of the foundations of the Kingdomโ€™s Vision 2030, which aims to:

  • Improving the care and safety of patients.
  • Promoting medical progress.
  • Attaining financial sustainability in the healthcare industry.
  • Making Saudi Arabia a regional center for advanced health solutions.

On the path to global Leadership

Through these initiatives, Saudi Arabia is proving that a healthy future lies in digital transformation and innovation. The leading experience of the virtual hospital โ€œSehaโ€ provides a global model and opens the way for other countries to benefit from this strategy.

Building a health system based on artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and digital twins not only changes the way care is delivered but also completely reshapes the relationship between the patient and the health system. In doing so, the Kingdom positions itself as a global leader towards a new era of smart healthcare.
