The National Insurance Company โ€“ Daman, part of PureHealth, has shared findings from an analysis of its claims data identifying eye health as a significant area of healthcare utilisation, with findings suggesting that a large proportion of individuals may be living with undiagnosed vision conditions.

The analysis indicates that up to seven in ten people could have undetected eye conditions, with diabetic populations considered particularly vulnerable. The data further shows that the overwhelming majority of eye-related claims are associated with disease rather than injury, with diabetes, cataracts, and dry eye syndrome identified as leading contributors.

Khaled Ateeq Aldhaheri, Chief Executive Officer of Daman, noted that the insurer’s approach goes beyond providing coverage. “By using data to anticipate health risks and identify where earlier intervention can make the greatest difference, we are able to support more proactive, effective care, helping members maintain their quality of life and avoid more complex health challenges over time,” he said.

The findings are consistent with guidance from the World Health Organization, which has noted that a considerable proportion of vision impairment globally is preventable or treatable when identified at an early stage. Retinal imaging and routine eye examinations are regarded as important tools for monitoring vision health, particularly for individuals managing chronic conditions such as diabetes.

Age-related patterns within the claims data indicate that members between the ages of 36 and 65 account for nearly half of all eye-health-related claims. Those aged 46 to 50 represent nine percent of claims within this group, pointing to middle age as a period where preventive screening may be especially beneficial.

Abdalqader Alshawi, Acting Chief Health Officer at Daman, underlined the role of regular examinations in protecting long-term vision. “Early screening allows clinicians to detect and manage conditions before they progress, particularly for people living with chronic diseases, where timely intervention can significantly reduce the risk of complications,” he said.

In response to these findings, Daman has incorporated eye health awareness into its wider wellbeing and disease management programmes. The company recently hosted a webinar to help members identify early signs of common eye conditions and understand the importance of routine eye care.

Daman says it will continue to use data-driven insights to support preventive healthcare priorities in the UAE, with a focus on encouraging earlier intervention and improved long-term health outcomes across its membership base.
