Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital (SKGH) in Umm Al Quwain has successfully completed the first stage of a planned surgical treatment for a 67-year-old woman with advanced rotator cuff arthropathy affecting both shoulders.

The patient had experienced severe, long-standing shoulder pain that significantly affected her daily activities, sleep, mobility and independence. Following detailed clinical and radiological assessments, the hospitalโ€™s orthopaedic team developed a staged treatment plan, beginning with the shoulder causing the greatest functional limitation.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Abdulqadir Alzarooni, acting Chief Executive Officer, Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital, said: “At Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital, we are committed to providing specialised care for patients with complex orthopaedic conditions. This case is an excellent example of the importance of coordinated multidisciplinary care in the management of complex shoulder conditions and demonstrates how advanced surgical interventions can help restore function for patients experiencing significant disability. The successful outcome reflects the expertise of our orthopaedic team and the coordinated care provided throughout the patient’s surgical and rehabilitation journey.”

The first procedure involved a Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA), an advanced form of shoulder replacement used for patients with severe rotator cuff damage combined with arthritis. The surgery was performed by Dr. Amro Mohamed and the orthopaedic surgical team, with support from anaesthesia, operating theatre staff, nursing and physiotherapy teams.

Following the procedure, the patient showed encouraging progress, including improved pain control, greater shoulder stability and early functional recovery. A structured rehabilitation programme was subsequently initiated to gradually restore movement, strength and independence.

The case highlights the role of multidisciplinary care and advanced surgical techniques in helping patients with complex shoulder conditions regain function and improve their quality of life.
