Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre has announced that its Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City has been accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the UAE’s national laboratory for measles and rubella.
The accreditation places the laboratory within WHO’s global network dedicated to monitoring and controlling both diseases, recognizing its capabilities in accurate diagnostics, disease surveillance, and rapid response. The recognition follows a comprehensive WHO assessment of the laboratory’s quality standards, biosafety measures, and diagnostic performance.

His Excellency Dr Rashid Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, said: “This accreditation reflects Abu Dhabi’s vision to build a proactive health system with the highest levels of readiness and the ability to protect communities. It also demonstrates the emirate’s continued investment in advanced infrastructure, national talent, and internationally recognised standards.“
Using advanced serological and molecular testing technologies, the laboratory supports early detection and data-driven public health decision-making. It is integrated into Abu Dhabi’s smart health ecosystem, helping strengthen disease surveillance and emergency preparedness.
The milestone reinforces Abu Dhabi’s growing role in global health security and builds on the laboratory’s existing designation as a WHO National Influenza Centre.
