Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has introduced an advanced food intolerance diagnostic test using endomicroscopy for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Approved by the Department of Health โ Abu Dhabi, the technology enables specialists to observe how intestinal cells react to specific foods in real time, supporting more accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment.
The procedure uses an endoscope equipped with microscopic imaging technology to examine cellular responses after small amounts of food particles are introduced into the small intestine. Performed under sedation, the examination typically takes less than an hour.

The test is intended for patients experiencing persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and digestive discomfort, following specialist assessment.

Dr. Sacha Sidani, Staff Physician, Gastroenterology, Digestive Disease Institute, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi said, โMany patients with chronic gastrointestinal symptoms spend years searching for answers. This technology allows us to see what happens at a cellular level in the intestines, giving us a level of diagnostic precision that was not previously possible. By identifying the exact foods triggering the patientโs symptoms, we can provide personalized, effective care to significantly improve their quality of life.โ
The approach complements conventional food allergy testing and may help patients avoid unnecessary dietary restrictions while maintaining nutritional balance.
This development further strengthens Abu Dhabiโs position in specialised healthcare and highlights the growing role of advanced diagnostic technologies in delivering more personalised patient care.
