King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Madinah has successfully managed a complex high-risk pregnancy, helping a 34-year-old woman achieve a successful delivery after experiencing recurrent fetal losses over 10 years.

The pregnancy complication was linked to maternal Anti-Kell antibodies, which can cross the placenta and affect fetal red blood cells, potentially causing severe anaemia and life-threatening complications.

The KFSHRC team developed a treatment plan involving plasma exchange to reduce antibody levels, medication and close weekly monitoring of the fetus. The approach delayed severe anaemia until the 28th week of pregnancy, allowing the team additional options for intervention.

Two intrauterine blood transfusions were later performed in collaboration with specialists at KFSHRC in Riyadh. Changes in the fetal heartbeat subsequently required an emergency Caesarean section, resulting in the birth of a baby boy weighing approximately 1.65 kilograms.

The newborn received specialised neonatal care, including phototherapy and blood transfusions, before being discharged home. He continues to receive follow-up care and is reportedly meeting expected growth and developmental milestones without complications.
