Aster Volunteers has strengthened its community-based cancer support network in the UAE through the expansion of COSMOS (Circle of Strength, Master of Self), an initiative focused on providing emotional, psychosocial and peer support for people affected by cancer.
The first COSMOS Orientation Programme, held at Amity University Dubai, brought together more than 400 cancer survivors, volunteers, caregivers, healthcare professionals and community members. Twelve cancer survivors representing six nationalities shared their journeys of resilience and hope, highlighting the importance of timely care and community support.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman, Aster DM Healthcare, said: “At Aster, we believe healthcare extends beyond medical treatment to include the emotional, psychological and social wellbeing of patients and their families. Through Aster Volunteers COSMOS, we are creating a compassionate support network that brings together the right stakeholders to provide hope, encouragement and strength throughout the cancer journey. “Cancer affects more than the individual receiving a diagnosis. It impacts families, caregivers and the wider community. COSMOS is built on the belief that people should not have to navigate this journey alone. Through COSMOS, we are creating a sustainable support ecosystem built on connection, shared experiences and compassion,” said Ms. Sarah Ilyas.
The programme featured survivor-led activities, multidisciplinary discussions on cancer care, and the launch of a structured leadership framework to strengthen volunteer engagement, survivor participation and community partnerships.

Designed to complement clinical treatment, COSMOS offers survivor buddy programmes, peer support, counselling, workshops and resource sharing to help patients and families navigate the emotional and psychosocial challenges of cancer.
Supported by a growing network of more than 400 registered volunteers, the initiative aims to expand community-based cancer support across the UAE through volunteer engagement, peer mentoring and survivor-led initiatives.
