Ajman, UAE: Thumbay University Hospital has successfully performed its first Left Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) wedge resection, marking a significant milestone in its advanced thoracic surgery programme.
The minimally invasive keyhole procedure was performed on a patient with two small lung masses in the upper lobe after an initial biopsy produced inconclusive results. The hospital’s thoracic surgical team successfully removed both masses through small incisions using Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS).

The minimally invasive approach reduced post-operative pain, enabled faster recovery, and allowed the patient to be discharged after a one-night hospital stay. Follow-up imaging confirmed full lung expansion and a successful recovery.
The milestone highlights Thumbay University Hospital’s commitment to expanding access to advanced surgical techniques and delivering high-quality, patient-centred care through innovative minimally invasive procedures.
