The South African Department of Health is urging the public to remain alert to mpox symptoms following a rapid rise in laboratory-confirmed cases across the country. As of 17 September, authorities had recorded 18 confirmed and one probable case, with most cases reported in the Western Cape.
The Western Cape, particularly Cape Town, accounts for 15 cases, while three have been reported in Gauteng and one in KwaZulu-Natal. Thirteen cases were identified between 13 August and 17 September, raising concerns about ongoing local transmission. Patients range in age from 23 to 50 years, with 18 males and one female among the reported cases.

Authorities are also investigating a recent probable case involving a person who travelled to Spain earlier this month and returned to South Africa on 14 September. South African health officials are coordinating with Spanish authorities to confirm the laboratory results.
Mpox can affect anyone and is mainly spread through close physical contact with an infected person, including contact with skin lesions or contaminated items such as clothing, bedding and towels. Prolonged face-to-face contact involving respiratory droplets can also result in transmission.
Common symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and skin rashes or lesions. Symptoms may develop within 5 to 21 days after exposure. People who develop symptoms, particularly after close contact with a suspected or confirmed case, are advised to seek medical care promptly and avoid close contact with others.

The government, with support from the World Health Organization, has secured limited supplies of MVA-BN mpox vaccines and Tecovirimat treatment as part of its outbreak response. Authorities will determine how these resources are deployed to help contain transmission.
Health officials are also encouraging communities to avoid stigma and discrimination against people affected by mpox, noting that supportive environments can help people seek care and support outbreak-control efforts.
