The Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, in consultation with the Australian Fatwa Council and senior Imams, has announced that the Holy Month of Ramadan 1446H will commence on Saturday, March 1, 2025, across all Australian states and territories.

According to astronomical calculations, the new moon for Ramadan will be visible after sunset on Friday, February 28, 2025. In Sydney, the sun will set at 7:32 PM (AEST), while the new moon will set at 7:44 PM, allowing for a 12-minute window for visibility. In Perth, the sun will set at 6:52 PM (AWST), and the new moon will set at 7:08 PM, providing a 16-minute opportunity for sighting.

Based on these observations, the first night of Ramadan and the Taraweeh prayer will take place on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, following the Isha prayer.

The determination of Ramadanโ€™s commencement follows the method adopted by the Australian Fatwa Council, which considers the calculated birth of the moon before sunset, the duration of the moonset after sunset, and the possibility of sighting. This approach aligns with the practices of many reputable scholars, Islamic councils, and Muslim-majority countries worldwide.

The Australian National Imams Council and the Australian Fatwa Council have acknowledged the presence of differing scholarly opinions on the matter and have called for mutual respect among the Muslim community. The councils urged unity in upholding shared values and common interests.

Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad extended his prayers and well wishes to the Australian Muslim community and the global Muslim population. He called upon all Muslims to observe fasting while seeking divine blessings for peace, security, and the alleviation of hardships faced by people worldwide, particularly in Gaza, Palestine.
