Carta Healthcare has released new survey findings highlighting strong support among health system IT leaders for keeping clinicians involved in the design and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI).

The survey, conducted among members of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), found that 81% of respondents rated clinician involvement in AI as mostly or vitally important, while none considered it unimportant.

The survey also found that 77% had seen better outcomes when AI worked alongside clinicians rather than independently, with no respondents reporting that clinician-AI collaboration failed to help.

Respondents identified AI hallucinations as the leading risk of using AI without oversight, followed by bias, model drift, liability and exposure of protected health information.

“Health system IT leaders are telling us plainly that AI earns trust when clinicians stay in control,” said Brent Dover, CEO of Carta Healthcare. “That is what holds up under audit, under accreditation review, and in the moment a result has to be defended. Clinicians at the helm, with AI as the force multiplier, is the only model that scales.”

Health IT leaders also emphasised that AI should augment clinical judgment rather than replace it and should be properly governed and validated before being used for clinical or operational decisions.

The findings underscore the growing importance of clinical oversight, responsible AI governance and human involvement as healthcare organizations expand their use of AI technologies.
