The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported no evidence of ongoing transmission following the death of a laboratory worker from severe pneumonia in Russiaโs Irkutsk Oblast, while noting that the cause of the illness remains undetermined.
The employee of the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East was hospitalised on September 29 and died on October 2, 2026. Initial media reports raised concerns about possible pneumonic plague and laboratory exposure. However, Russian authorities informed WHO that testing did not detect plague or other investigated high-threat pathogens in the patient and identified contacts.
Authorities said precautionary measures included contact tracing, laboratory testing and medical monitoring. More than 5,500 laboratory tests were conducted, with no high-consequence or dangerous pathogens detected. All identified contacts completed medical observation, remained asymptomatic and were cleared from follow-up. No additional linked cases were identified.
Russian authorities also reported that two independent investigations found no laboratory biosafety or biosecurity incidents at the institute. The patientโs death was classified as pneumonia of undetermined etiology because the causative agent was not established.

WHO said the absence of a confirmed diagnosis limits its ability to fully assess the event and exclude all possible causes. A laboratory-associated exposure cannot be entirely ruled out, although available information does not establish one.
The organisation has offered technical support to Russian health authorities and recommended further investigation, appropriate laboratory testing and continued respiratory disease surveillance. WHO is also urging laboratories handling hazardous biological agents to maintain robust biosafety and infection prevention practices.
Based on currently available information, WHO does not recommend travel or trade restrictions related to the event.
