In a symbolic rite of passage, the newest cohort of aspiring physicians at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) donned their pristine white coats for the first time, signifying the commencement of their medical education. This pivotal ceremony marks the initiation of the college’s rigorous medical curriculum and represents a significant step in these students’ journey toward becoming accomplished healthcare professionals.
Class Composition and Achievements
This year’s intake at WCM-Q comprises 44 medical students, with 22 of them being Qatari nationals. An impressive 41 members of this class progressed after completing the comprehensive two-year WCM-Q pre-medical curriculum, while three talented individuals joined from other esteemed universities. The White Coat Ceremony served as the culmination of a three-day orientation program, during which students familiarized themselves with the intricacies of their academic journey, met esteemed faculty and peers, and gained insights into the four-year medical curriculum.
Keynote Address by Dr. Essa Abuhelaiqa
The event featured an inspiring keynote address delivered by Dr. Essa Abuhelaiqa, an esteemed alumnus from the Class of 2011, who currently serves as a nephrology consultant at Hamad Medical Corporation. His words resonated with the new cohort, offering invaluable insights into the path they are about to embark on.
Expanding Educational Horizons
In addition to the new medical students, WCM-Q also welcomed 55 students to its pre-medical curriculum, of which 18 are Qatari nationals, along with 15 long-term residents of Qatar. Furthermore, the college introduced 21 high school graduates to its one-year Foundation Program, of which 19 are Qatari nationals.
Orientation Programs
Both pre-medical and foundation students underwent specialized orientation programs, tailored to provide them with the necessary tools for academic success. From comprehensive tours of WCM-Q’s state-of-the-art campus to sessions on time management, academic expectations, and integrity, these programs laid a strong foundation for their educational journey.
Six-Year Medical Program
The combined pre-medical and four-year medical curriculum at WCM-Q forms the integrated Six-Year Medical Program, culminating in the prestigious Cornell University MD degree. This program equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in medicine.

Reflecting on this momentous occasion, first-year medical student Fatima Al-Mohammed expressed, “Receiving my white coat is an incredibly meaningful moment in my journey as a medical student.” She emphasized the dedication and hard work she is poised to invest in giving back to her country, Qatar.
