Doha, Qatar — In a landmark achievement for Qatar’s healthcare sector, The View Hospital has become the first private hospital in the country to be accredited under the 8th Edition of Joint Commission International (JCI) standards—a globally respected framework for quality and safety in healthcare.
The Gold Seal of Approval® from JCI is more than just a certification—it’s an international symbol of excellence, recognizing hospitals that consistently uphold the highest standards in clinical practice, patient safety, and operational performance.
So, what exactly is JCI, and why does the 8th Edition matter?
Joint Commission International is the global division of The Joint Commission, a U.S.-based nonprofit that accredits healthcare institutions worldwide. Its 8th Edition standards, effective January 1, 2025, represent the most significant evolution in JCI guidelines to date. The new edition introduces critical updates designed to advance safety, transparency, sustainability, and technology integration across the patient care journey.
Structured into five core sections—Accreditation Participation Requirements, Patient-Centered Care, Healthcare Organization Management, Global Health Impact, and Academic Medical Center Standards—the 8th Edition places added emphasis on digital health innovation, cybersecurity, environmental sustainability, and non-punitive approaches to patient safety reporting. Notably, a new Healthcare Technology chapter addresses electronic health records, telehealth, and data security, while environmental sustainability standards—developed in collaboration with the International Hospital Federation’s Geneva Sustainability Centre—encourage healthcare institutions to lead the transition toward low-carbon, resilient healthcare systems. While sustainability compliance becomes mandatory in 2026, early adoption signals institutional leadership and forward-thinking commitment.
“This accreditation is more than a recognition, it’s a reflection of how we operate every day,” said Dr. Fatih Mehmet Gul, CEO of The View Hospital. “From the structure of our workflows to the way teams communicate and make decisions, patient safety and quality of care are embedded in every step. It’s a culture we’ve built intentionally -excellence here isn’t a special effort- it’s simply how we work.”
The accreditation was awarded following a comprehensive on-site evaluation conducted on April 27, during which JCI surveyors assessed The View Hospital’s performance across critical domains—from patient assessment and medication safety to infection control, leadership, and information management.
Joe Hazel, CEO of Apex Health, the group managing The View Hospital, emphasized the broader vision: “We aspire to create a healthcare model that not only meets the highest international standards but also evolves with the communities we serve. Our goal is to ensure that every hospital within Apex Health, in Qatar and beyond, delivers care that is globally benchmarked, digitally enabled, and locally trusted.”
He added: “Achieving this accreditation under the Eighth Edition holds particular significance. These latest standards go beyond clinical safety — they emphasize digital health integration, patient engagement, leadership accountability, and continuous improvement across the entire care journey.
With JCI 8th Edition accreditation now in place, The View Hospital is not only setting a benchmark in Qatar but is also reaffirming its commitment to healthcare that is safe, transparent, sustainable, and profoundly human.
