Burjeel Specialty Hospital has launched Sharjahโs first PET/CT service, expanding access to advanced cancer imaging and precision oncology services within the emirate.
The new service is part of the hospitalโs Nuclear Medicine Department and is integrated with the Burjeel Cancer Institute (BCI), linking molecular imaging with multidisciplinary oncology expertise across diagnosis, cancer staging, treatment planning and follow-up care.
The department is equipped with a GE Discovery IQ PET/CT system, which combines PET and CT imaging to support cancer detection, staging, treatment-response assessment and recurrence monitoring. Advanced detector technology enables faster image acquisition, while lower-dose imaging and Q-Clear reconstruction are designed to support image quality and quantitative assessment.

The service provides access to a range of PET/CT tracers, including 18F-FDG, PSMA and DOTA-peptide, supporting imaging for different cancers and selected neurological and endocrine conditions.

Bringing this capability to Sharjah allows us to combine advanced molecular imaging with multidisciplinary cancer expertise so that each patientโs imaging can directly inform a personalized treatment plan,โ said Prof. Dr. Humaid Al Shamsi, Chief Executive Officer of Burjeel Cancer Institute.
Beyond diagnostic imaging, the team will work with BCIโs Nuclear Medicine specialists in Abu Dhabi to provide access to targeted radionuclide treatments, including radioactive iodine therapy, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy and Lutetium-177 PSMA therapy.

The department operates in accordance with FANR requirements and internationally recognised radiation safety standards. Its clinical services are guided by NCCN guidelines and SNMMI/EANM imaging standards, supporting an integrated pathway from advanced imaging to personalised cancer treatment planning.
