Overview

Mariam Talia’s journey from apartheid-era South Africa to the leadership team across multiple local and multinational companies is a testament to resilience, purpose-driven leadership, and a steadfast commitment to justice and ethics and the betterment of lives.

Mariam’s early experiences with racial, social, and gender oppression fueled her determination to serve others and strive for equity. As the first in her family to earn a university degree, she graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Rhodes University, setting the stage for a remarkable 33-year career that has spanned local and multinational organizations across Africa and the Middle East

Currently, Mariam serves as Legal & Compliance Operations Lead at Boehringer Ingelheim, driving the implementation of robust compliance programs across culturally varied regions. Her leadership is rooted in integrity and collaboration, ensuring that business operations not only meet regulatory standards but also uphold the highest ethical principles. Previously, as Regional Compliance Officer, she led multifaceted ethics initiatives across 25+ countries, and at Eli Lilly, she shaped compliance strategy at the director level before embarking on international leadership roles.

Mariam’s global influence is amplified by her active professional presence and dedication to lifelong learning, including recent certification in AI prompt engineering. Her thought leadership supports both industry recruitment and digital transformation, addressing compliance needs in evolving regulatory and technological landscapes.

Her early experiences with social and gender inequality shaped a core philosophy: ethical leadership must be inclusive, empathetic, and bold. Mariam is a passionate mentor, dedicated to nurturing the next generation of pharmaceutical leaders and champions mentorship for next-generation talent, emphasizing authenticity over competition, particularly for women in science, as highlighted during her participation in DLA Piper’s “Inspirational Women in Life Sciences” for International Women’s Day 2025. She believes true empowerment comes from authenticity and collaboration, encouraging women to define their own paths and celebrate their individuality.

As the pharmaceutical industry embraces artificial intelligence, sustainability, and globalized care delivery, Mariam’s leadership combines integrity, agility, and cultural fluency. Her vision is a sector where ethical principles are not just compliance boxes but the foundation for patient-centric innovation and trusted partnerships. Mariam Talia exemplifies how resilience, strategic insight, and ethical rigor can redefine compliance, from reactive oversight to proactive safeguarding of public health values.
