Medlab ME 2024: Shaping Healthcare's Future with AI Integration

Dubai, UAE -January 2024- An age of scientific breakthroughs, modern therapies, and superior health outcomes is being welcomed by the major boom in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the global healthcare sector. The Dubai World Trade Center will host Medlab Middle East from February 5–8, and the event will explore the critical role artificial intelligence plays in laboratories.

AI is gaining traction in medical imaging in the UAE, driven by government initiatives. Also, Various healthcare organizations in Dubai have successfully adopted AI-based medical imaging, with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) using AI for automated breast cancer and lung disease detection. Saudi Arabia has recently introduced AI-powered eye screening, streamlining diagnoses of diabetic retinopathy, resulting in time and cost savings.

However, AI is proving instrumental in expediting drug discovery, with a projected global market value of US$24.7 million by 2029, growing at an annual rate of 53.3%. Professor Hassan Ugail, from the University of Bradford, will share insights at Medlab Middle East about his innovative AI tool, “OrQA” (Organ Quality Assessment). Developed with a £1.2 million investment from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), this tool assesses organ transplant suitability within seconds, potentially increasing life-saving kidney and liver transplants.

Professor Ugail explains: “We use state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques to train a machine learning algorithm and worked with a number of surgeons to ‘score’ a range of organs. The machine then learns about the scores, alongside other characteristics such as the colour, texture and shape of the organ.”

In October 2023, the UAE inaugurated its first Centre for Excellence (COE) for artificial intelligence, featuring an organ donation and transplant center. The COE utilizes AI to match donors and patients, facilitating organ transplants and prioritizing critical cases. Plans are underway to expand the tool’s global reach in the coming year.

Important change: Medlab Middle East is moving to a paid-for visitor ticketing system, but you can still register for free before 8 Jan 2024. https://bit.ly/medlabme-mededge

Tom Coleman, Exhibition Director, Informa Markets Healthcare concludes: “The integration of AI into laboratory practices is already redefining the landscape of scientific discovery and driving innovation in healthcare. In the years to come, the need for AI in medical imaging will continue to grow.’’
