Yas Clinic, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), has reported promising results from gene therapy for a 43-year-old patient with transfusion-dependent thalassemia, who no longer requires regular blood transfusions following treatment.
For years, the patient, Fahad, received blood transfusions every three to four weeks to maintain stable haemoglobin levels. He also experienced complications associated with long-term transfusions, including iron overload, which required ongoing iron chelation therapy and affected his quality of life.
After comprehensive medical evaluations and multidisciplinary assessments, Fahad was identified as a suitable candidate for gene therapy. He underwent treatment in 2025, involving the collection of his own stem cells, genetic modification in a laboratory and reinfusion following preparatory treatment. The approach aims to address the underlying cause of the inherited blood disorder using the patientโs genetically modified cells.

Since treatment, Fahad has remained under close medical follow-up and has achieved transfusion independence, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits.
Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic, said: “Gene therapy represents a transformative advancement in the treatment of inherited blood disorders and reflects the UAE’s commitment to making the most advanced therapies available to patients. The success of this case marks an important milestone in expanding access to innovative treatment options and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional center for advanced healthcare and medical innovation.”

Dr. Mohammed Abu Haleeqa, Hematologist at Yas Clinic, said: “For patients who have spent most of their lives dependent on regular blood transfusions, reaching a stage where transfusions are no longer required can be truly life-changing. Gene therapy offers the opportunity to address the underlying cause of the disease using the patient’s own genetically modified cells, providing an advanced treatment option for patients who may not have suitable donors for transplantation.”
The achievement reflects ongoing efforts by Yas Clinic and ADSCC to expand access to innovative treatments for inherited blood conditions within the UAE. Long-term monitoring remains important to assess treatment outcomes and patient safety.
