Dr. Omar, a consultant plastic surgeon and a key organizer and speaker at the 11th Abu Dhabi International Conference for Dermatology and Aesthetics (AIDA 2025), was interviewed. He is also the Vice President of the Society of Plastic Surgery and the Head of Plastic Surgery Department at Z Military Hospital in Abha.
His main interest in this year’s conference is the introduction of a new surgical workshop for dermatologists. This workshop aims to train and teach them suturing techniques, including how to perform local flaps and direct sutures. This initiative is particularly relevant as dermatologists are increasingly performing minor procedures that result in scars, and the goal is to help them achieve nice scars for their patients.
Dr. Omar also provided key advice for individuals considering aesthetic plastic surgery:
- Ideal Body Mass Index (BMI) and Weight: Patients should have a healthy weight before undergoing procedures like liposuction, as it’s not a solution for general weight loss.
- No Smoking: Absolutely no smoking three months before and three months after surgery to ensure proper healing and minimize scarring.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Eat healthy, walk, and try to reduce weight through diet. He emphasized that plastic surgeons are there to help when these efforts aren’t enough, but a healthy foundation is crucial. He even mentioned having dieticians on staff to assist patients with weight management.
Regarding the youngest age for plastic surgery, Dr. Omar noted a cultural shift. While in Europe, people typically seek plastic surgery above 40, in the UAE, non-surgical procedures like fillers are sought as early as 17-18. Due to the rise in obesity and bariatric surgery, they are now seeing patients in their 20s and 30s for post-bariatric procedures, a significant change from 30 years ago when clients were mostly above 40 for anti-aging treatments.
