The Department of Health โ€“ Abu Dhabi (DoH), the regulator of the healthcare sector in the Emirate, has launched the Integrated Postnatal Care Programme under the Womenโ€™s and Childrenโ€™s Health Strategy. This initiative aims to advance maternal and child health outcomes by ensuring timely, high-quality and accessible postnatal support. The programme highlights the importance of comprehensive postnatal care and reflects DoHโ€™s ongoing dedication to advancing the health and well-being of all community members.

The Postnatal Care Programme will integrate home visits, telemedicine, and outpatient services to ensure new mothers receive continuous, personalised support throughout the postpartum period. The telemedicine sessions will be offered to mothers within the initial days after the discharge to monitor the health and well-being of mothers and their infants. This ensures early detection of potential concerns, provides expert guidance and addresses any immediate postnatal questions, offering peace of mind to mothers. In addition, mothers can schedule visits to their nearest hospital or primary care clinic at 7 to 14 days, and again 6 weeks postpartum.

To promote integrated care for both mother and child, the programme will offer additional home visits for mothers who experienced complications during pregnancy or childbirth, as well as for those whose newborns are facing health issues or have special needs. These mothers will receive two home visits conducted by nurses or midwives, one within the initial days after hospital discharge, and the second between 7 to 14 days later.

H.E. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health โ€“ Abu Dhabi (DoH) said: โ€œThe postpartum period is one of the most physically and emotionally challenging times in a womanโ€™s lifeโ€”and yet, one of the most overlooked. With the launch of this programme, we are placing the health of mothers and newborns at the heart of our priorities. By combining telemedicine, in-person follow-ups, and home care, weโ€™re delivering a comprehensive support system that extends beyond hospital walls. This proactive, personalised approach is carefully designed to meet each motherโ€™s unique needs, empowering women to care for their own health and their babyโ€™s wellbeing, giving every child a stronger, healthier start. Such initiatives reinforce Abu Dhabiโ€™s position as a global leader in healthcare and ensure that every mother and newborn receive the exceptional care they deserve.โ€
