Franklin Lakes, USA: BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a global leader in medical technology, announced the appointment of Dr. Ronald Silverman, MD, FACS, as the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, effective December 4, 2023.
In his new role, Dr. Silverman will lead BD’s Medical Affairs organization, overseeing medical affairs across business units, regions, and the central team. With nearly 30 years of experience spanning clinical practice, academic research, and industry roles, Dr. Silverman will leverage his expertise to advance BD’s pipeline of innovative solutions aligned with evolving patient needs. He will also contribute to the safety and compliance of BD’s existing product portfolio.
Dr. Silverman’s appointment comes as BD aims to improve patient outcomes through increasingly efficient, effective, and personalized care. He will report to Beth McCombs, BD’s Executive Vice President, and Chief Technology Officer, and join the BD Executive Leadership Team.

Dr. Silverman replaces Dr. William Sigmund, who served as BD’s Chief Medical Officer since January 2018 and announced his retirement in June 2023. Dr. Silverman brings a broad experience from his recent role as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at 3M Health Care. He previously led Medical and Clinical Affairs teams for multiple business units within 3M, highlighting his leadership in both the industry and academic settings.

Dr. Ronald Silverman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Maryland and trained in surgery and plastic surgery with Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital. He is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, is on the advisory board for the University of Maryland Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the Clark School of Engineering and holds membership with 7 professional organizations. Dr. Silverman holds two patents, has authored more than 80 journal publications and contributed to several textbooks.
