UAE Residents Travelling to Saudi for Umrah-Hajj? Here's what you need to know About the Vaccine You Need to Take

This time, with the Umrah season coinciding with the influenza season, the UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (Mohap) mandated the influenza vaccination for all travelling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah or Hajj, underscoring the health security of pilgrims. Here’s all you need to know about the rule and the vaccine.

To do list for the Umrah-Hajj travellers

  1. Starting March 26, 2024, travellers are expected to present influenza vaccination cards at travel checkpoints, proving they have gained immunity against the flu viruses.
  2. This vaccination campaign reflects UAE’s  commitment to combating infectious diseases.

Who can and should be vaccinated?

Highly recommended for:
  1. Those who live or work with many other people (military barracks, etc)
  2. Healthcare workers
  3. Children below 5 years
  4. Pregnant women
  5. Adults aged 65 years and above
  6. People with chronic conditions (diabetes, asthma, etc)
  7. Smokers
  8. Those with weakened immune system (HIV or cancer)
  9. Those considered obese

If you are at high risk of developing flu-related complications, get vaccinated now! 

Preventive guidelines to follow

  1. Verify your health stability for Hajj and Umrah, especially if you are aged 65+ or have any chronic disease.
  2. Visit a health centre to ensure you receive all necessary vaccinations, well in advance.
  3. Maintain an adequate supply of medication, adhere to all advised immunizations, and engage in regular exercise.

Please note

  1. Get yourself vaccinated 10 days before the day of departure to ensure vaccine efficacy and development of optimal immunity.
  2. Don’t take a new dose if you have received the influenza vaccine already, but within the past year.

Why should you take it?

  1. The main motive is to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.
  2. Having it 10 days in advance, will allow it enough time to develop sufficient immunity. 
  3. The jab would effectively lower your risk of contracting the flu upon your return.

  5. Efficient vaccine administration
  6. Bookings for appointment 
  7. Vaccination cards will be made available through the Al Hosn app.

  1. Good news to the Emiratis, you get it for free. 
  2. Infants aged 6 months and above are eligible to receive influenza vaccine for free.
  3. Expats can get it for Dh50 at 12 ambulatory health centres at Dubai Health. 
  4. Price ranges from Dh75 to Dh120 at private healthcare facilities.
  5. Offers and discounts can be availed if available.
