Burjeel Cancer Institute has introduced therapeutic radiopharmaceutical treatment for patients with certain types of metastatic tumours, expanding access to precision oncology and advanced nuclear medicine services in the UAE.

The therapy uses radioactive medicines that target specific receptors on tumour cells, delivering radiation directly to cancerous tissues while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy cells. Treatment plans can be tailored to the biological characteristics of individual tumours, supporting a more personalised approach to cancer care.

The treatment is delivered through the Nuclear Medicine Department at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi, with support from a multidisciplinary team of nuclear medicine physicians, medical oncologists, medical physicists, technologists and radiation safety specialists.

The introduction of the therapy is supported by the Department of Health โ€“ Abu Dhabi as part of efforts to improve access to innovative treatments and strengthen advanced cancer services in the emirate.

Prof Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute, said: โ€œThe introduction of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals represents an important milestone in the instituteโ€™s strategy to expand advanced cancer care services. The institute continues to invest in innovative technologies and highly specialised treatments in alignment with the UAEโ€™s vision to enhance healthcare quality and provide patients with access to the most advanced therapies within the countryโ€.

Dr Ibrahim Abu Gheida, Medical Director of Burjeel Cancer Institute, said: โ€œThe introduction of the treatment further strengthens the instituteโ€™s capabilities in nuclear medicine and targeted molecular oncology. This type of therapy requires advanced infrastructure and a highly experienced specialised team to ensure optimal clinical outcomes while maintaining the highest safety standards, adding that the institute continues to develop advanced treatment programmes based on the latest scientific evidence in cancer careโ€.

Dr Firuz Ibrahim, Head of Nuclear Medicine at Burjeel Medical City, said: โ€œThe availability of this advanced therapy at Burjeel Cancer Institute allows patients to receive world-class treatment within the UAE. The goal is to provide comprehensive, patient-centred care supported by the latest global medical technologiesโ€.

Dr Goncalo Ferreira, Consultant in Nuclear Medicine at Burjeel Medical City, said: โ€œThe introduction of the treatment marks a significant step forward in the development of nuclear medicine services, reflecting the advanced expertise of the clinical team in delivering highly precise molecular therapies in accordance with international standardsโ€.

The development strengthens the instituteโ€™s nuclear medicine capabilities and supports the UAEโ€™s broader efforts to advance precision medicine, multidisciplinary cancer care and access to evidence-based treatments.
