Doctors in Abu Dhabi have successfully treated a 13-month-old child with a rare inherited immune disorder, Omenn Syndrome, through a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Yas Clinic, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), used stem cells donated by the childโs father after no fully matched sibling donor was available.
The child had suffered repeated severe infections, poor weight gain and a serious skin condition from an early age. Genetic testing identified a RAG1 gene mutation linked to the rare immunodeficiency. Given the severity of the condition and the familyโs previous history, doctors proceeded with a haploidentical bone marrow transplant using the fatherโs stem cells.

His skin condition improved, infections stopped and he was discharged from hospital, with continued recovery and weight gain. Doctors highlighted the case as an example of the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care and specialised treatment for children with rare immune disorders.
