Doctors in Abu Dhabi have successfully treated a 13-month-old child with a rare inherited immune disorder, Omenn Syndrome, through a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Yas Clinic, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), used stem cells donated by the childโ€™s father after no fully matched sibling donor was available.

The child had suffered repeated severe infections, poor weight gain and a serious skin condition from an early age. Genetic testing identified a RAG1 gene mutation linked to the rare immunodeficiency. Given the severity of the condition and the familyโ€™s previous history, doctors proceeded with a haploidentical bone marrow transplant using the fatherโ€™s stem cells.

“The case showed how specialised medical expertise and advanced treatment can make a major difference for children with rare conditions said, Dr Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic, “Successfully treating a child with such a rare and complex immunological condition demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering the highest standards of care,โ€ she said.

The transplant resulted in successful engraftment and gradual restoration of the childโ€™s immune function. His skin condition improved, infections stopped and he was discharged from hospital, with continued recovery and weight gain. Doctors highlighted the case as an example of the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care and specialised treatment for children with rare immune disorders.
