King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) Jeddah has successfully performed a hysterectomy using Vaginal Natural Orifice Trans-Endoscopic Surgery (VNOTES), eliminating the need for external surgical incisions.

The procedure was performed on a woman in her fifties experiencing severe vaginal bleeding caused by uterine fibroids. Unlike conventional abdominal laparoscopic surgery, VNOTES uses a natural access route, allowing surgeons to perform the procedure without incisions on the abdominal wall.

The minimally invasive approach can help reduce postoperative pain and blood loss, shorten hospital stays and support faster recovery, while potentially improving aesthetic and quality-of-life outcomes for patients.

The procedure was carried out by the hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology using high-definition visualization and specialized surgical instruments.

VNOTES remains relatively limited in adoption because it requires advanced expertise in both vaginal surgery and minimally invasive endoscopy, along with careful patient selection and multidisciplinary coordination among surgical, anesthesia and nursing teams.

The successful procedure highlights the growing use of advanced minimally invasive techniques in specialized gynecological care and expands treatment options for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids.
