Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) has introduced PillSense, a swallowable diagnostic capsule designed to rapidly detect upper gastrointestinal bleeding and support faster emergency care across Abu Dhabi.
The capsule uses light absorption technology to identify the presence of blood in the gastrointestinal tract and wirelessly transmits results to clinicians in under 10 minutes. This enables quicker diagnosis, reduces unnecessary invasive procedures, and helps doctors make faster, data-driven treatment decisions.
Dr Marwan Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, said: โIn emergency care, speed and clarity are critical. This technology provides clinicians with rapid, reliable insights, allowing them to make informed decisions with confidence and ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.โ
During a pilot phase at SSMC, PillSense helped determine that invasive procedures were not immediately required in 86% of assessed cases. Supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the innovation aims to improve patient outcomes, enhance emergency care efficiency, and strengthen Abu Dhabiโs position as a leader in healthcare innovation.
