The healthcare sector is a paradox: it exists to improve health, yet it significantly contributes to environmental degradation. Globally, healthcare accounts for over 4% of global CO2 emissions.  If the health sector were a country, it would be the fifth-largest emitter on the planet. Public health institutions, such as hospitals, are resource-intensive establishments, that consume large amounts of resources including electricity, water, equipment,  and construction materials to operate continuously—24 hours a day, 7 days a week—providing a comprehensive range of services that cover every aspect of health and well-being. At the same time, the waste generated by these institutions is vast, including medical waste, plastics, and other materials that can pose serious risks to both human health and the environment.

As we strive for progress in healthcare, it’s essential to consider how to make these institutions more sustainable. Sustainability in healthcare not only helps protect the planet but also improves the health of communities by reducing the long-term impacts of pollution and resource depletion. The journey towards making sustainability a reality involves several key areas such as the adoption of renewable energy in hospitals, implementation of waste management practices, and the design of green healthcare facilities. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a nation known for its rapid development and ambitious sustainability goals, green hospitals represent a vital step toward a healthier and more resilient future. A recent specialised report reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions from the healthcare sector by 20 percent by 2030 through the implementation of several energy-saving measures, recycling programmes, and waste reduction initiatives.

What are green hospitals?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes green buildings as structures created and processes used that are both environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout the building’s life cycle. Green building design for healthcare facilities is a holistic approach that integrates sustainable practices into every aspect of their operations, from construction and energy use to waste management and procurement. Key features of green hospitals system  include:

  • Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources: Utilizing renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power and incorporating energy-efficient systems to reduce overall consumption.
  • Sustainable Design: Employing eco-friendly building materials, optimizing natural light, and enhancing insulation to lower energy needs.
  • Water Conservation Measures: Implementing systems for rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and water-efficient fixtures.
  • Waste Reduction: Establishing comprehensive recycling programs and adopting alternatives to single-use plastics.
  • Indoor Air Quality: Using non-toxic materials, low-emission materials and advanced ventilation systems to improve the health and productivity of patients and staff.

Benefits of green hospitals

Green hospitals provide numerous advantages that resonate across environmental, economic, and social dimensions:

  • Environmental Impact: By reducing resource consumption and emissions, green hospitals contribute to global climate goals and protect local ecosystems. In arid regions like the UAE, water-saving technologies are particularly crucial.
  • Economic Efficiency: Despite higher initial costs, green hospitals save money in the long run. Energy-efficient buildings and waste management systems reduce utility expenses and operational costs.
  • Patient and Staff Well-being: Studies show that green spaces and natural lighting improve recovery times and reduce stress for patients. For healthcare workers, healthier environments lead to higher job satisfaction and productivity.

UAE’s green hospital initiatives

The UAE has already begun integrating sustainability into its healthcare infrastructure. Hospitals across the UAE have already taken the initiative , for instance, several hospitals have adopted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications, ensuring adherence to global sustainability standards.

In UAE, Emirates Health Services (EHS) has implemented a range of sustainable initiatives across its healthcare facilities. As part of its commitment to environmental responsibility, EHS hospitals will feature green parking spaces for electric vehicles, along with dedicated bicycle and community parking areas at all its facilities.

Green hospitals are no longer just a trend—they are a necessity

Moreover, the UAE’s commitment to innovation has led to the exploration of cutting-edge technologies like solar-powered hospitals and AI-driven energy management systems. These advancements not only align with global best practices but also position the UAE as a leader in sustainable healthcare.

Overcoming barriers in the UAE

Despite the benefits, challenges remain in implementing green hospital initiatives. High upfront costs, lack of awareness, and resistance to change can hinder progress. In the UAE, addressing these barriers requires:

  • Policy support: Strengthening regulations and incentives for sustainable healthcare infrastructure.
  • Public-Private Partnerships: Encouraging collaboration between government bodies, private investors, and healthcare providers.
  • Education and training: Building capacity among healthcare professionals to implement and manage green practices.

Looking Ahead

Green hospitals are no longer just a trend—they are a necessity. To stay ahead of the curve and fully capitalize on the sustainability opportunity, healthcare organizations must embrace innovative thinking and secure the commitment of all stakeholders. By optimizing waste management, sharing resources, investing in renewable energy, and proactively adapting to regulatory changes, they can meet stakeholder expectations, achieve financial savings, and enhance public health.

For the UAE, investing in sustainable healthcare is an investment in both the well-being of its people and the planet. Through cutting-edge technologies, robust policies, and collective action, the UAE can set a global example of how green hospitals can drive a healthier, more sustainable future.
