Mpox is an infectious disease similar to smallpox. Discovered in the late 1950s, this zoonotic disease is self-limiting (i.e. has a history of resolving itself with or without specific treatment) but can cause severe illness leading to death.

What is Mpox?

Mpox virus is transmitted through direct face-to-face, skin-to-skin, mouth-to-mouth, or mouth-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, bodily fluids, or contaminated materials.

How does it spread?

Rash (blisters), fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, swollen lymph nodes, etc. are a few apparent and common symptoms that typically last 2-4 weeks. Notably, few of those infected might show no signs of symptoms.

Signs & Symptoms

Mpox can likely mimic other illnesses and conditions, such as chickenpox, herpes, etc. Hence, Mpox must be distinguished and detected through a Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

How to detect Mpox?

The people who are most at risk of getting sick are partners and family members. Furthermore, individuals with weakened immune systems, such as youngsters and pregnant people, may experience severe symptoms.
