It is a common type of dementia and typically develops after age 60. Alzheimer's disease eventually kills brain cells and takes away their life.
While there’s no proven strategy for prevention, key lifestyle changes can certainly reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes vegetables, fruits, fish, whole grains, nuts, and olive oil. Reduce red meat and sugar for balanced nutrition.
Regularly work on your body with moderate-intensity physical exercise of any kind within your ability. It can reduce the risk by up to 50 percent.
Exercise your brain by learning new things and using puzzles, sudokus, memory games, etc. Challenging yourself gives your brain some flexibility.
An active social life reduces stress and keeps one mentally active. Volunteer, travel, join social or cultural clubs, and spend time with family and friends.
Poor sleep is linked to dementia, while quality sleep removes brain toxins. Establish a consistent sleep routine to support brain health.
Quit smoking and drinking. Don’t listen to music in loud volume. Take care of your mental health, and seek help if necessary.
Practice stress management with breathing and relaxation. Keep your heart healthy by managing blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol effectively.
Researchers are still exploring dementia triggers. Until then, stay safe, spread awareness, and support others this World Alzheimer’s Day.
