5 Common habits that harm children’s eyesight

By Ayesha Ayath Aslam

Study says, by 2050, nearly 40% children and adolescents worldwide are estimated to struggle with seeing objects at a distance.

Myopia Prevention

Considering the rate of growing myopia cases, it is essential to follow some preventative measures, especially among children. Here are some common habits to avoid.

Constantly rubbing

Constantly rubbing eyes causes infection due to bacteria, and may even damage the cornea. In case of itching or irritation, try using artificial tears.

Reading/playing in the dark

Be it video games, or homework, remind your kids to study, read or play in properly lit rooms, to avoid eye strain, headaches, and myopia.

Poor diet

Lack of certain nutrients can weaken the cells and tissues of the eyes causing vision problems. Consume nutrient rich foods — leafy greens, citrus fruits, fish.

Excess screen time

Looking at screens for too long can cause eye fatigue, lesser blink rate, dryness, and hence, blurry vision. Limit screen-time, using productive alternatives.

Staring too closely

Maintain posture, and practice the 20-20-20 rule — for every 20 minutes of staring at anything close, look at an object 20 ft. away for 20 seconds.

Staying Indoors

Staying inside tempts children to use devices and limits their sight to close objects. Therefore, encourage outdoor play and expose them to natural light.

Bonus tip

It cannot be emphasized enough that regular check-ups are key to identify any problems at the earliest, and address them before it worsens.
