In a deeply significant moment for Africa’s public health future, Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi of Tanzania has been nominated as the next Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region. The announcement came during a Special Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held in Geneva ahead of the World Health Assembly.
Professor Janabi, a respected figure in Tanzania’s healthcare landscape, was selected from a field of prominent candidates—including Dr N’da Konan Michel Yao (Côte d’Ivoire), Dr Mohamed Lamine Dramé (Guinea), and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa (Togo)—after the untimely passing of Regional Director-elect Dr Faustine Ndugulile in November 2024.
Pending formal appointment by the WHO Executive Board on 28–29 May 2025, Professor Janabi is expected to assume leadership of the Regional Office for a five-year term, with the potential for renewal.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Janabi struck a hopeful, determined tone:
“Thank you for your trust in me. I will not let you down. Your support underscores our collective resolve to build a healthier, stronger, and more united Africa,” he said.
“As we face challenges ranging from infectious and noncommunicable diseases to climate change and underfunded health systems, we must harness African resilience and unity.”
His nomination comes at a pivotal time for the African Region, which continues to face persistent health inequities, limited healthcare infrastructure, and the complex aftermath of COVID-19. However, it is also a region of immense promise—with youthful populations, deep scientific potential, and increasingly assertive leadership on global health matters.
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus extended his congratulations to Professor Janabi and praised the strength of the other candidates:
“I offer my warm congratulations to Professor Janabi on his nomination as Regional Director for Africa, and also to the United Republic of Tanzania. He brings significant experience and leadership at a time when the region—and WHO—must evolve to meet rising health challenges. I look forward to working with him to build a healthier, fairer Africa.”
Dr Tedros also acknowledged Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, who has been serving as Acting Regional Director following the end of Dr Matshidiso Moeti’s tenure.
“Congratulations, Professor Janabi. This is a reflection of the deep trust Member States have placed in you. The road ahead is challenging, but your leadership is a beacon of continuity and progress,” said Dr Ihekweazu.
As Professor Janabi prepares to take the helm, all eyes are on how his leadership will shape the continent’s health future—one marked by both immense obstacles and transformative opportunity.
