A Saudi-led humanitarian medical campaign has provided free eye care to more than 5,000 people in Rangpur, northern Bangladesh, expanding access to specialised ophthalmic services for low-income communities.
The seven-day programme was funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and Al-Basar International Foundation. It was conducted at Makka Eye Hospital in Rangpur, which operates under the supervision of the foundation.
โA total of 5,014 patients received free eye examinations, medical consultations, medicines, and reading glasses. In addition, 586 cataract surgeries were successfully performed,โ Dr. Ahmed Taher Hamid Ali, the foundationโs country director.

Three volunteer Saudi doctors from KSrelief worked alongside the hospitalโs medical team to deliver treatment. The initiative aimed to address financial barriers that prevent many residents from accessing specialised eye care, particularly for cataracts and age-related vision problems.

For many patients, the campaign offered access to procedures and medicines they could not otherwise afford. One recipient, 55-year-old China Begum, said she had been unable to pay for cataract surgery despite being advised to undergo the procedure earlier.
The initiative highlights the role of humanitarian partnerships in expanding access to essential healthcare services and supporting vulnerable communities through free medical treatment.
