King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) has successfully removed a rare tumour that extended from a woman’s uterus through major blood vessels into her heart, completing the complex procedure in a single operation.
The patient, a woman in her forties, experienced fatigue, shortness of breath, upper abdominal pain and abnormal uterine bleeding. Advanced imaging revealed that the tumour had extended through the inferior vena cava into the right atrium, threatening normal circulation and cardiac function.
A multidisciplinary team comprising specialists in cardiac surgery, gynaecologic oncology, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care developed a coordinated treatment plan. The operation lasted more than 16 hours and involved removing the tumour from the pelvis, major blood vessels and heart.

Surgeons also removed the tumour’s uterine origin and reconstructed the affected heart wall and blood vessels. Completing the treatment in one operation helped avoid multiple high-risk procedures and reduced the potential burden of repeated surgeries and recovery periods.
The case highlights the role of multidisciplinary expertise, advanced imaging and complex surgical planning in treating rare conditions involving multiple organs and vital blood vessels. It also demonstrates the importance of coordinated specialist care in managing challenging cases that require expertise across several medical disciplines.
