We always hear the word “Functional foods” and they are rapidly gaining popularity in the Middle East and around the world, and this is why: These foods go beyond basic nutrition, offering added benefits like improved immunity, digestion, and mental well-being.

Some of these foods are already well used and known, but some are just getting the attention and recognition needed, thanks to their added value, such as adaptogens and nootropics.

Here are some of the functional foods we already know well:

  • Dates: Rich in natural sugars, fiber, and antioxidants, dates have long been used for quick energy and digestive support.
  • Laban and Yogurts: They are known for their ability to support gut health and hydration.
  • Turmeric, cumin, and sumac: Not only flavor enhancers but also contribute anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits.
  • Zaatar (wild thyme): Traditionally used to enhance memory and mental clarity, and rich in antioxidants.
  • Lentils, and chickpeas provide sustained energy and are naturally rich in nutrients that support heart and metabolic health. Infusions made from anise, mint, and chamomile have been traditionally consumed for relaxation, digestive comfort, and overall wellness.

And the list does not end there, but now, they’re being highlighted more than ever, blending ancient wisdom with modern wellness trends.

Now let’s talk more about the modern functional foods like adaptogens and nootropics,

Adaptogens, such as ashwagandha and maca, are being embraced for their ability to reduce stress and support energy levels. They help manage or counter hormone production and therefore alter your body’s response to the production of these hormones, for example: stress.

Nootropics are used to target specific areas of cognitive and brain function, such as caffeine, Lion’s mane and Ginkgo biloba, but these properties of contributing to brain health are also found in many everyday foods such as eggs, blueberries, oily fish and nuts.

The rise of functional foods in the Middle East and Africa reflects a broader shift towards holistic health and wellness, as people increasingly focus on nutrition as a key to longevity and vitality.
