DHA Announces Historic Liver Transplant in Dubai

Dubai, UAE- December 2023- Dubai achieved a historic milestone in healthcare with the announcement of the first successful liver transplant surgery by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). The four-hour surgery, conducted by a medical team from King’s College Hospital London in Dubai, heralded a significant advancement in organ transplantation.

Led by Dr. Parthi Srinivasan, Chief Transplant Surgeon at King’s College Hospital London and Director of Liver Transplant Services in Dubai, the surgery addressed a rare liver condition in a 38-year-old woman. The patient, diagnosed with jaundice and liver cirrhosis, underwent a liver transplant from a deceased donor on November 29, 2023.

Dr. Marwan Al Mulla, CEO of the Health Regulation Sector at DHA, highlighted the success of the procedure, drawing attention to the Authority’s commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and innovation in healthcare services.

However, A breakthrough in Dubai’s medical scene, the liver transplant demonstrates the city’s aptitude for providing sophisticated and intricate medical procedures. Dr. Al Mulla also emphasized DHA’s support for the National Programme for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation ‘Hayat’ and the increase in organ donation rates in Dubai, a 117.7% increase in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Chairman Ali Al Obaidli of the UAE National Transplant Committee emphasized the dedication of the ‘Hayat’ national program to advancing organ and tissue donation and transplantation. He underscored the program’s collaborative approach, engaging both local and global stakeholders.

Dr. Tashfeen Siddiq Ali, Chief Medical Officer at King’s College Hospital London in Dubai, provided insights into liver transplantation, and its life-saving significance for patients with acute liver inflammation. He shared the specialized care provided at King’s College Hospital London in Dubai for patients with various liver conditions.

The successful liver transplant surgery not only brings hope to the patient and her family but also portrays Dubai’s growing capabilities in providing advanced, life-saving medical procedures. The city continues to strengthen its position as a global healthcare destination, offering contemporary healthcare services and promoting a healthier lifestyle among its residents.
