Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has given approval for the establishment of a state-of-the-art medical city dedicated to women and children’s health in Abu Dhabi.
The Specialized Facilities Within the Medical City
The visionary medical city, presented by the Department of Health(DOH) – Abu Dhabi and PureHealth, will house key facilities including the renowned Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), designated as a Centre of Excellence for pediatric care. The Corniche Hospital will cater to women and newborns’ health, while a rehabilitation facility and a mental health center for women and children will complete the comprehensive healthcare complex.
Highlighting the significance of this development, Sheikh Khaled emphasized that the medical city plans represent a major enhancement to Abu Dhabi’s healthcare ecosystem, fortifying the emirate’s advanced healthcare infrastructure and consolidating its position as a leading healthcare destination.
Directives from Sheikh Khaled include the continued development of high-quality, specialized facilities within an integrated and preventive healthcare system, utilizing research capabilities and modern technology to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the community.
He was briefed on SKMC’s plan to establish a Centre of Excellence in pediatric care, which will boast over 200 doctors specializing in 29 areas, including oncology, neurosurgery, and transplantation.
The Centre of Excellence will feature 250 beds, including dedicated beds for mental health services and long-term pediatric healthcare. Moreover, it will drive research and innovation in children’s health to enhance therapeutic outcomes for children facing complex health challenges.
Integrated Maternal and Pediatric Care:
The plan also involves relocating the Corniche Hospital facilities to the vicinity of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, aiming to bolster the integrated services system of the new medical city, scheduled to open its doors in 2027. The hospital will offer 205 beds, including specialized wards for children and maternity care, with a dedicated team of over 120 doctors and 460 nursing and midwifery specialists.
The medical city, part of the PureHealth Group, will additionally house the Salma Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital, contributing to the advancement of healthcare services and research in women and children’s health.
